Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your Makeup

Let’s face it, buying makeup can get expensive. And the only thing worse than the expense is realizing that you really don’t use certain products very often. Did you know many of the products you have can serve more than one purpose?
With that in mind, Casey Casterline, co-founder of eDivv.com, a popular beauty sample swapping site, offers up some ways to get the most out of the makeup in your daily regimen.
“I live in a small New York City apartment, if I didn't come up with creative ways to use the products, I wouldn't have any place to sleep,” says Casterline. The following tips are great ways to use products in a unique fashion or have them pull double-duty.
Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your Makeup
  • Mascara Wands
    • Use as eyebrow brushes or spritz a little hairspray on them and use to tame pesky flyaways.
  • Foundation
    • If it doesn’t match your skin tone it may serve perfectly as an eye shadow primer.
  • Lip Sticks
    • Have your lipstick pull double-duty as a blush if you realize you’ve run out at the last minute.
  • Powder Eye Liner
    • Add a little water to powder eye liner to turn it into a liquid for a different look.
  • Eye Shadow
    • Shadows that match your roots can easily be brushed in to hide them if your hair has grown out a bit.
    • Apply a dark shadow to your eyelashes prior to your mascara to give them a boost in volume.
  • Plain Lip Balm
    • Apply around the inside of the eye with your finger to act as a highlighter.
  • Hairspray
    • Allow a light mist of hairspray to fall on your face after you’ve applied your makeup to set it for the day.
  • Eye Cream
    • Use a hydrating eye cream in the place of lip balm if you run out. It will keep your lips supple and give them a light shine.
About eDivv.com: eDivv launched in 2014 and was created by Casey Casterline and Jon Katz. It was the first online community created exclusively for users to swap beauty samples. As an avid subscriber to many beauty subscription boxes, Casey was frequently frustrated when she received products that she wasn’t interested in. In response, Casey and Jon went on a mission to develop a platform that would bring users together to effectively facilitate the trading of beauty samples in a fun and effortless way.

Be Bold: Lexus Looking for Close Shave on St. Patrick's Day

Lexus & St. BaldrickHow bold will you go for a good cause? To celebrate St. Patrick's Day and the all-new Lexus IS, a performance sedan with an adventurous personality, Lexus is partnering with the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, to create the Lexus Bold IS contest. This unique social media-driven challenge seeks out courageous people willing to shave their heads for a worthy cause—and the chance to win $2,500. The contest will help raise awareness about children's cancer, and Lexus will donate $25,000 to St. Baldrick's to help fund the best research to find cures for all childhood cancers.
Beginning today, the contest encourages brave participants to get bold and go bald at a local St. Baldrick's event, or on their own, and create a 15-second Instagram video stating what bold act they will perform if they win the $2,500 prize. Contestants will upload their video URLs to the www.LexusBoldIS.com registration page, where their videos will be available for viewing in a public gallery. By shaving their heads in support of the St. Baldrick's Foundation, participants stand in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during treatment. In a buzzworthy move, Will Nicklas, Corporate Manager, Lexus Marketing, Planning and Communications, will also be shaving his locks to boldly support this cause.
"Lexus constantly strives to push boundaries and take risks, and we encourage our consumers to participate in this grassroots program to help conquer childhood cancers," said Brian Bolain, Lexus corporate manager of marketing communications. "Children's charities are very important to Lexus and partnering with the St. Baldrick's Foundation for this program is a meaningful way to help kids."
"We are thrilled about this partnership with Lexus and encourage our legion of supporters to dare themselves to be bold with this opportunity," said Kathleen Ruddy, CEO of the St. Baldrick's Foundation. "With each new bald head, bold idea and the support of Lexus, we hope to raise more awareness and funds for lifesaving childhood cancer research, so all kids can live long and healthy lives."
Videos will be judged on creativity, the most compelling story, and the most "likes" on the site. The deadline to submit a video is March 18, 2014 at 11:59 p.m., and winners will be announced at the end of March. Ten entrants will win $2,500 each. Like your hair too much to part ways? An additional $1,000 prize will be given to one person chosen at random who registers on the site and votes for their favorite video.
Select Lexus dealers will also partner with the St. Baldrick's Foundation for local community events. Visit www.LexusBoldIS.com to upload your video or vote for your favorite entry.

I’m not sure about you, but I can never recreate what my hairstylist does after I get home. Try as I might, its just never the same! Now it looks like there may be a great solution.  In a perfect fusion of technology and beauty Matrix launched the "Matrix Class for Glass" series with the premiere video featuring Kika Rocha.

Hair Obsessed: Molly Sims Goes Red!

Actress and model Molly Sims unveiled her dramatic hair color makeover – from sun-kissed blonde to vibrant red – to underscore the power of the new Nexxus Color Assure color care collection. The collection features a Pre-Wash Primer, our revolutionary first-ever pre-treatment, that shields hair against color fade before it's even a problem.

Molly Sims

Sims' color transformation was the vision of celebrity colorist Aura Friedman, who joins the brand as Nexxus Celebrity Color Expert to lend her expertise on color preservation and proper color care.

Best known as an iconic blonde beauty, Sims said she "has always wanted to go red" but worried about keeping the color vibrant. "I am obsessed with this color and I want to keep it looking this way!" says Sims.  She was inspired by the new Nexxus Color Assure products to experiment with her color because she is "confident that my color will last longer and my hair always will be camera-ready."

"We know women have an emotional connection with their colored hair - one that starts with elation which turns to frustration because of color fade and the inability to make that color last," said David Rubin, Vice President, Hair Care for Unilever U.S. "By developing Color Assure - with our breakthrough primer to help lock out water so colored hair stays vibrant twice as long - Nexxus makes it possible for women to love their hair color longer!"

Products in the Nexxus Color Assure collection are infused with a blend of clear, weightless oils, including almond, to lock in moisture, nourish hair and reduce breakage; coconut, to provide softness and elasticity; and argan oil, to improve shine and vibrancy. The color care system is sulfate free and provides two times longer color protection, compared with non-conditioning shampoos, when used over an eight-week period.

To celebrate that just-colored feeling, Nexxus is hosting a "Prime Color" contest** on Facebook beginning February 19, 2014 through April 1, 2014. Sims will kick off the contest by posting a selfie of her freshly colored hair, and encourage others to share their own just-colored selfies, using the hashtag #primecolor on Instagram and Twitter. Nexxus will be giving away a daily beauty bundle including the entire Color Assure system (Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Shampoo, Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Conditioner, Color Assure Glossing Tonic and the new Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer), as well as a ceramic hair straightener and curling wand.

For contest details and more information about Color Assure, visit the Nexxus Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/Nexxus.

The Color Assure collection includes: Color Assure Pre-Wash Primer, Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Shampoo. Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Conditioner, and Color Assure Glossing Tonic. The products are now available at mass retailers, select drugstores and supermarkets nationwide. Suggested retail prices are $9.99 - $17.99.

Glow & Go: How To Get Gorgeous At Home With Conair

You need to look fab for your festivities this holiday season, right? Between the shopping for gifts and preparations for family gatherings and social events there's not time to get a much needed (and hard to get appointment) at the salon and/or spa.

I love 'spa-ing' but its just not realistic to squeeze in over 2 hours (plus travel) worth of 'me' time. With parties and dinners, I need to look polished and refreshed in a flash. I am going to share my tips on getting ready quick (and for way less) at home and the two products you’ll need to do it.

So let’s "Glow and Go" with: the new Conair true glow Sonic Cleansing Brush (for face and body) and the new Infiniti Pro by Conair Hair Designer Dryer. Whether throwing a dinner party, going to a big event or even just a girls' night out to toast the new year, your glowing skin and shiny hair will fit the festive sparkle. And best of all, you’ll spend less time getting more out of your beauty routine and avoid the busy, pricey salons.

Did you know you hold the key to healthy, glowing skin? It’s right in the palm of your hand. Ditch your abrasive scrubs or dulling washcloth for the Conair true glow Sonic Cleansing Brush! It uses sonic technology with a built-in timer to gently and effectively remove the dead, dull layers to help purify and revive skin, unveiling a healthy glow in just 60 seconds. Want to know the best part?  You’ll be SAVING UP TO HALF the cost of what you would pay for other pricey sonic skincare brushes... It’s the perfect item to use year round.

What makes the Conair true glow Sonic Cleansing Brush a skincare essential?

It’s dermatologist tested! After just one use, it reduces the appearance of pores by 30%, reduces redness and makes cleansers 2x more effective.
Conair’s sonic skincare technology offers 3 speeds operating at up to 300 oscillations/second, expertly extracting dirt and makeup from pores to prevent the formation of blackheads, while leaving your skin feeling healthier.
Automatic cleanse-timer and 6-zone cleansing cycle allows you to customize your facial routine with a handy timer that beeps after 10 seconds alerting you to move to another area of the face.  With six key zones covered in just 60 seconds, your face is fresher and cleaner than using a cleanser alone.
Waterproof and rechargeable allows for safe use in the shower or out, shutting off automatically after completing the cleansing cycle.
Gentle enough for daily use with your choice of mild cleanser.
All over cleansing with two separate brush heads allow for use on the face and body.

The Conair true glow Sonic Cleansing Solution Kit comes with the brush base rechargeable handle, two brush heads (face and body), and a charging stand and can be purchased online or at mass, drug and some specialty beauty retailers  for an average retail price of $99.99.

Red Carpet Beauty: Mala Rodriguez

Mala Rodriguez

MAKEUP INSPIRATION: For Mala’s makeup, Kim was inspired to create a smoky eye, paired with subtle soft lips to contrast the red dress Mala is wearing. She wanted to give a romantic feel and make it seem as she had just been kissed.

MAKEUP ARTIST:  Kim Bragalone

STEP-BY-STEP:

STEP 1: Kim prepped Mala’s skin by moisturizing with L’Oréal Paris Youth Code Texture Perfector Day/Night Cream prior to foundation

STEP 2: Next, she mixed two different foundation shades, using L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup in Natural Buff & Light Ivory to highlight and contour

STEP 3: She then used L’Oréal Paris Visible Lift Color Lift Blush using her fingers on the apples of her cheeks, which created a flawless rosy finish

STEP 4: For the eyes, Kim started with the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Eye Shadow Quad in Because I’m Worth It and used the gold shadow on her crease, spreading it all over her lid. She then applied L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Eye Shadow Quad in So Over It! , using the purple eye shadow and blending it in her upper lash line. To give the full smoky effect, she eye lined Mala’s upper lash line using  L’Oréal Paris The Blackbuster by Infallible giving it a winged cat eye

STEP 5:   To create dramatic lashes, Kim used the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Butterfly Mascara extending them outward from corner to corner

STEP 6: Kim created Mala’s nude pout by using L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Lingering Mocha.

For her hair check out tips after the jump.

HAIR INSPIRATION: Mala was inspired to keep it very retro this year and wanted to recreate more of a “vintage hair” feel. Hairstylist Rene helped achieve this by keeping the hairdo soft and inspire a romantic, innocent look.

HAIRSTYLIST: Rene Lam

STEP 1: To start, Rene sprayed L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Triple Resist Ultimate Strength Solution throughout Mala’s damp hair for protection

STEP 2:  She then worked a small amount of L’Oréal Paris EverCurl Sculpt & Hold Cream-Gel while the hair was still wet

STEP 3: Rene blowdried, leaving hair slightly damp to easily section the hair by pin-curling, using one-inch sections. She sprayed each section with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray In Extra Strong Hold before pinning and finished off the blowdry on medium heat until fully dried

STEP 4: Once Mala’s hair was cool, Rene removed the bobby pins and ran her hands gently though the curls to soften, and texturized with L’Oréal Paris EverStrong Thickening Tonic.

STEP 5: Rene left the bangs to flow naturally, running a small amount of the thickening tonic just to even out the texture

STEP 6: Last but not least, to tame the fly-aways, Rene used  L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Smooth Intense Frizz Taming Serum and locked the look with her favorite L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray in Extra Strong Hold.

Runway Hair Lust: Beautiful Byzantine-Themed Dolce & Gabbana Do’s

Redken Creative Consultant Guido created a soft, romantic Sicilian up- do that looked truly fit for a queen - or at the very least, fit for models dressed in the beautiful Byzantine-themed Dolce & Gabbana looks at the designer's Fall 2013 show in Milan.
But know that if "monarch" comes to mind, Guido did think "Italian princess" when he created this 5dg4look - but he added that it wasn't supposed to make a perfectly coiffed, straight-from-the-hairdresser's impression. He was thinking of the kind of woman with inherently beautiful style, who does her hair herself. Some of the models also wore gold, jewel-covered crowns in the show, but in case you aren't already envious enough of the woman that inspired this style, we have to add that with a look like the one Guido created today, she looked like the epitome of royal and romantic, crown or no crown.
5dg5

"This elegant style is another variation of the Dolce & Gabbana woman this season, playing on that Sicilian idea of softness, romance, and a certain cinematic, womanly beauty. I took inspiration from the idea of an iconic woman with a kind of natural Italian allure- think the actress Sofia Loren or the women in the 1960 film la Dolce Vita. There's a natural ease to her beauty, she's sexy but in a conservative way. It's not at all a messy look, and it's all about the details - I wanted it to have shine, but to not at all look greasy - just a soft, glossy finish."

Get the look with our step-by-step guide…

Redken Products Used:
quick tease 15 backcombing finishing spray
shine flash 02 glistening mist
guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam

5dg1Guido, Redken Creative Consultant, works his magic backstage at Dolce & Gabbana.

5dg2Create the Look:

  • Apply guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam to damp hair from roots to ends and blow-dry with a round brush.
  • Add quick tease 15 backcombing finishing spray to the crown section by section, holding each section for a few seconds to let it dry before moving onto the next.
  • After the quick tease 15 has dried completely, backcomb hair with an oval boar bristle brush for light, airy volume throughout the crown.
  • Create a very small (1 inch) part that's slightly off center and then gently brush hair from front to back starting behind the 1- inch parted section in front, folding into a chignon flat against the head at the nape of the neck and securing with pins
  • Spray style with shine flash 02 glistening mist for a glossy finish.
