Being a native New Yorker I've witnessed some seriously kind acts among strangers. I know some people might be surprised to hear that. New Yorkers do get a bad rep, but when you look closer you can see the good. Which is why I was so happy to learn about an incredible movement currently happening in NYC this month. I am even happier to share that I am participating in The Kindness Card experiment: a social movement for change that draws attention to the power we have to improve ourselves, our communities, and our city with simple acts of kindness!
The Kindness Card: /n/ a card given to individuals to recognize and celebrate a kind act that they’ve performed.
How does The Kindness Card work?
In early June, about 5,000 Kindness Cards will be spread throughout New York’s five boroughs. The card must be passed between fellow New Yorkers inspiring a chain reaction of creating and spreading kindness in our city. With each pass, the receiver is awarded $10 that can be redeemed for a gift card online or chosen to be donated to a local charity before passing the card on to the next deserving person (with every new recipient, it reloads).
I am excited to participate in a movement that encourages interaction amongst strangers, acknowledges others’ good deeds and helps give back to this movement.
As a Kindness Ambassador, my goal is to spread this message both online and IRL. So I’m getting in on the fun by helping to reward fellow New Yorkers for their kind actions and being a spark to help ignite this movement.
Here’s how it works:
The Kindness Card Experiment is a social movement for change that draws attention to the power we have to improve ourselves, our communities, and our city with simple acts of kindness that connect us to each other. Through this initiative, we hope to celebrate the positive acts of kindness via a social experiment circulating 3,000 physical cards (representative of kindness) across the five boroughs of Manhattan for 30 days, to see just how much kindness we as a community can spread. It’s our hope to encourage interaction spanning the city streets, and bringing awareness behind just how kind of a place NYC actually is.
Each recipient of a Kindness Card must pass the card to a fellow New Yorker in recognition of a kind act you witness, and so on, forming a chain reaction of creating and spreading kindness in our city. With each pass, every new receiver of the card is awarded $10 that can be redeemed for a gift card online or can choose that it be donated to a local charity before then passing the card on.
You don’t need a Kindness Card to participate in the movement. Change and action comes from within and each of us has the power to make an impact on a kinder New York. It is the intent of the Kindness Card Experiment for New Yorkers to continue the chain of recognized acts of kindness through passing on the card. Simply put, once you receive the card, engage with the online community, and then pass it on to someone else demonstrating an act of kindness – a kindness ripple effect!
By passing The Kindness Card on, you are part of something bigger – part of a better New York City and ultimately, part of a better world.
