Hello, summer! With the rising temps we know our skin changes. The question becomes what do we do to keep our skin healthy and happy all summer long?
We turned to Berenice S. Rothenberg, a Certified Clinical Electrologist (CCE), a FEHS licenses cosmetologist and a member of some of the most prestigious electrolysis societies in the country, for her expert opinion to some of our most frequently asked questions.
Question: What products do I need to swap for summer?
Answer: Products used in warmer weather should be lighter in texture and less oily, the better to keep pores clean and unclogged. The low moisture levels and strong winds of the winter months have put our skin through a great amount of stress, resulting in dull, flaky, red skin. To make the transition into spring, Berenice says to avoid oil based products such as mineral oil and lanolin.
Q: Is there any specific part of my skincare routine that I need to change?
A: Skin must be cleansed more often after exercise and outside activities during warm weather months. A warmer climate makes skin oily and clogs pores clog more easily. You still need to moisturize – but use a lighter, oil-free product and be sure to apply sunscreen more often after exercising or being in the water.
Q: How do I get a gorgeous glow, without a tan?
A: Exfoliation is essential for glowing skin. Skin should be exfoliated more often in the summer to break up the keratinized protein that accumulates on the skin, which accelerates during the winter months. Remove unhealthy surface cells with exfoliation to allow the products to work more effectively.
Q: Should I keep my hair removal appointments during the summer?
A: It’s imperative to keep your scheduled hair removal treatment appointment to maintain hair free skin. Hair grows faster during the summer so these appointments should not be skipped.
Q: What is your biggest tip for keeping your skin healthy in the summer?
A: Sunscreen is the best defense against aging. Using an SPF of 30 is generally great for skincare
protection. But use a higher SPF if you have very sensitive skin.
