Recently, I met the ultimate color matchmaker Clairol Color Director, James Corbett. Naturally I got some tips on how you swipe right on your perfect shade match from the comfort of your own home! See below for his expert tips:
- In general, the lighter your skin tone, the lighter red you can pull off. Shades like strawberry and copper are considered warmer as they have more gold in them, and they work beautifully on women with light skin and eyes. I love a great iconic bright red like Natural Radiant Auburn.
- For deeper or more olive skin tones I recommend shades with more brown in them, as these are more neutral. Natural Medium Reddish Brown and Natural Dark Auburn are gorgeous on women who want to try red but are afraid it won’t look natural with their skin tone.
- Even when they’ve found their perfect shade, some women are still hesitant to go red because of the shade’s high-maintenance reputation. There is some truth to this. The red hair color molecule in hair dye is the largest hair color molecule so it washes out the fastest, leading to fading.
- Because red hair washes out the fastest, it’s essential to use a top notch conditioner. Healthier, stronger hair takes color evenly and it helps color stay vibrant and last longer.
