Ginger Approved: The 4 Top Beauty Products For Redheads
GINGER APPROVED BEAUTY by Jennifer Ross
Being a Red, (a.k.a. “Ginger” as the kids so affectionately refer to it as these days) can really limit your beauty options at times. Many foundations will be too pink or too yellow for you, many bronzers too orange, and a great deal of skincare too harsh for your sensitive skin. Even many hair products may dry out your already dry hair (Yes, redheads tend to have thicker, drier hair than blondes and brunettes) and will not support your natural copper tone. Down below are a few of my favorite “Ginger Approved” beauty products!
Tarte Mineral Powder Bronzer in Park Avenue Princess- Growing up on Long Island, most of my friends sported a healthy bronzed glow each year during the summer months that as a natural redhead, I was never quite able to achieve. I have tried my fair share of bronzers throughout the years to try and give myself a hint of color sans the sun or a tanning bed, only to find that this bronzer in particular is great for a few reasons. This paraben and oil free formula wears very gently on my skin, while its true golden brown hue gives me a sunkissd glow without making me look like an Oompa Loompa. (0.32 oz. for $29, available @ Henri Bendel)
Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel- This sulfate free cleanser will help take off your makeup and cleanse your skin thoroughly without stripping it of its natural moisture. I would not only recommend this product to the most delicate of Ginger complexions, but in fact this whole line. Boscia is a botanical brand of skincare that hails from Japan. They have products for all skin types and concerns, whether you be dry, oily, combination and/or aging, with acne. This alcohol and preservative free line is very price point friendly as well, with most of their products falling between $25 and $45 and not one product exceeding $50! (5 oz. for $26, available @ Sephora)
OJON Full Detox Rub-Out Dry Cleansing Spray- When you have naturally thick red hair that is on the drier side, you know you cannot wash it everyday. This is where a great dry shampoo like this comes in handy. It is ideal because it really helps to absorb the excess oil in my hair, while helping to replenish body and shine. And possibly most importantly, this white formula dissolves into my amber waves rather quickly not leaving me looking like I had a fight with a bottle of baby powder, where the powder won!
(1.8 oz. - 4.1 oz. for $18-$24, available @ Sephora)
NARS Blush in Orgasm- This peachy-pink powder blush infused with golden shimmer, is a cult classic. It is notoriously flattering to all skin tones, and that certainly does NOT exclude “The Reds” for once. This perennial favorite of make artists and beauty editors alike, will make your alabaster skin glow and your light eyes (most likely) really pop. (0.16 oz. for $27 available @ Bloomingdales)
Ginger Flavor by Jennifer Ross
Meet the newest EverSoPopular contributor: Jennifer Ross (aka Jessica).
Jennifer Ross is a makeup artist, writer and sometimes actress/comedianne (on a syndicated sitcom that airs in HER BRAIN "The Jen Ross Show") that hails from the Island of Long just an hour east of the big city. This is Ms. Ross' first and hopefully not last piece that is being featured on EverSoPopular. When Ross is not beating face, writing about beating face, or starring in her eponymous tv show that is only broadcast in her medulla oblongota, she enjoys laughing hysterically by herself at any given moment, and conducting random flash mobs anywhere below 34th street. Jennifer would like to thank her mother for giving her life even though it may have been a mistake, her good friend/"Lifesize" LeAura Luciano for publishing her yip yap on her here blog of blogs, and her Havanese dog/sister Molly for giving her a scratch on her forearm that looks like, well, something else that's really bad, but rest assured is NOT. Shalom.

How to Beat Christmas Creep with Andrea Woroch
Halloween is just over and things are already creepy. In fact, Christmas Creep actually began in July, when major retailers began testing out their holiday processes to ensure no unsightly crashes when things got busy. These sales also helped them observe the effectiveness of special deals, like free shipping. We asked Andrea Woroch, consumer and money-saving expert for Kinoli Inc, for her advice on how to how to beat Christmas creep.
Sam's Club began offering Christmas gift cards in August and Pier 1 kicked off the season in July with an email featuring a giant snowman enticing shoppers to "Preview holiday fun before it even gets to our stores."
On the plus side, early birds love getting a jump on gift shopping. They appreciated Target's "Cyber Monday" week in late September and look forward to beating procrastinating consumers to the best deals.
Before grabbing that early sale item, however, it's important to ask whether it's really such a good deal. It's possible you could save more by waiting and still enjoy a good selection.
Here's a brief Q&A to help you shop wisely this holiday season.
1. Is Black Friday Always Best?
The really good lost-leader deals are often limited to a small number of customers. These offers are simply there to lure shoppers into the stores, where you'll hopefully overspend in a Black Friday frenzy. If you're going to shop the day after Christmas, consider ShopSmart's 5 Tips to Bag the Best Black Friday Bargains, and abstain from purchasing an extra sweater just because the price looks good.
2. How Late Can I Shop Online?
Procrastinating consumers have figured out that Free Shipping Day is the best way to get great prices without having to pay for delivery. Scheduled in it's fourth year for Friday, Dec. 16, this one-day event allows consumers to shop from more than an anticipated 2,000 e-retailers and receive free shipping with delivery by Christmas.
3. What's the Thriftiest Form of Payment?
If you're going to hit the brick-and-mortar stores, it's easier to stick to a budget if you only pay with cash. Even debit cards make it easy to overspend, a fact that likely won't hit you until the monthly statement arrives. Having to part with actual greenbacks makes it much more real.
4. What Do I Do About Hard-to-buy-for People?
Begin shopping early to find the right present so you don't just grab any old thing at the last minute. Summer art festivals are one great place to shop for those who have everything. Christmas ornaments also make a good gift, and the selection and prices are much better early in the season.
5. How Can I Best Use Credit Cards?
If you're going to go the credit card route, use the one with the most favorable terms. Keep an eye on how much you've charged so you don't get socked with a fee and higher interest rate for exceeding your credit limit.
Also keep track of how much you've charged. It's so simple to just swipe and go, without thinking about the final bill. If you know the balance, it's a lot easier to plan how you're going to pay off the final total come January.
6. Do I Really Have to Make a List?
Yeah, yeah, you've heard it before, but nothing will keep costs lower than planning exactly who should be on your list and what you're going to buy them. Keep an eye and ear cocked throughout the year for gift ideas and add them to the list. Of course, it's better if you can knock some gifts out early by shopping throughout the year, but that advice is rarely well received.
7. What About Layaway?
Walmart revived their layaway program after five years, and that's a really good thing. You'll pay a small initiation fee to start-up an account, but you'll also be able to pay-as-you-go, avoiding nasty interest rates on credit card charges.
Nor are layaway programs limited to brick-and-mortar stores. Kmart has initiated an online program that allows you to lock in early low prices on thousands of items, including everything from clothes to televisions.

Scent Story: John Varvatos USA
The just released John Varvatos USA, $70.00, fragrance lives in a world that is polished, but rough
around the edges; it’s a place where hidden meaning is out in the open, but can only be
seen by those with a sixth sense for keeping things interesting. The John Varvatos
USA man is old enough to see possibilities, and young enough to believe in them,
driven with a Let's-Do-It attitude that is tastefully twisted.
“I have always been inspired by artistically-rebellious visionaries,” said John
Varvatos. “This fragrance is for those who challenge perceptions of reality, because
they are the ones who open up doors we never knew existed.”
The Scent Breakdown:
Its a fresh and woody scent infused with a little swagger and a lot of soul. Relaxed, casual yet elegant, the fragrance is ushered through clean and bright notes, spiked with an unusual encounter of red ginger and vetyvert.
TOP NOTES: Top notes include red ginger essence from Laos, juniper berries, and
cedrat from Sicily
MID NOTES: Heart notes of blue spruce, green cardamom absolute, and osmanthus
absolute
BASE NOTES: Background notes include vetyvert, belambre, and tonka bean from Venezuela.

The Do's and Don'ts of Layaway
Would you rather put holiday spending on your credit card or pay for it through a layaway program? Many Americans are opting for the latter, helping retrench these time-honored payment plans.
Walmart, Sears, Best Buy and TJ Maxx are just a few of the major merchants now offering layaway. In fact, Toys 'R Us has expanded its layaway program to include most toys, rather than just the big-ticket items.
Layaway nearly vanished before the recession, as credit card use grew in prominence. Stores preferred we swipe away because it was easier than handling all that paperwork. But with consumers leery of facing too much holiday debt -- and threatening to spend less this year in stores -- retailers began using layaway as a means of luring us back.
While this all sounds well and good, there are problems related to such programs. Time for expert help! We asked Andrea Woroch a consumer and money-saving expert for Kinoli Inc for her tips on how to navigate the Do's and Don'ts of Layaway.
Do Dissect the Fine Print
You'll have to sign a contract or layaway initiation form, which naturally contains a lot of vital information you could easily overlook. Don't let a long line or impatient clerk rush you through checking each detail so you know what to expect.
Do Consider Whether it's Worth the Origination Fee
There's a fair amount of paperwork, processing and labor involved in layaway plans, so stores charge a start-up fee for each order. Consider the amount of that charge is worthwhile compared to the overall total of your purchase.
Do Decide if You Really Need This Item
Should something happen and you decide not to go through with all payments, you'll likely have to pay a fee of roughly 25 to 30 percent of the total price of the layaway plan. That's a hefty fine for changing your mind, so make sure you really want the item before placing it on layaway.
Do Compare all Fees vs. Credit Card Charges
Add up the potential costs and consider whether you'd be better off placing a purchase on a credit card. According to a New York Times op-ed by Cornell professor Louis Hyman, a typical shopper could wind up paying far less interest by using a credit card, even if it has a fairly high APR. Plus, a credit card gives you purchase protection and, with some companies, price protection.
Don't Ignore the Internet
Don't let a sale combined with a layaway plan talk you into buying before researching your options. You'll often find better deals online and it's a lot easier to comparison shop with your mouse. Search for promo codes to use toward your coveted item, and then compare the total cost of the online purchase to what you'd ultimately pay by putting it on layaway.
Don't Neglect Your Expiration Date
There's a limit to how long Walmart will store your stuff. As with other stores, they want to move it before Christmas, so check to ensure you have enough time and cash to pay the entire debt off on time or you'll forfeit everything you've already paid. Mark that date on your calendar and make sure you make all payments before it hits.
Don't Forget About Automatic Withdrawals
Some merchants prefer to set-up automatic checking-account deductions, ostensibly to save you the hassle of coming in to make each payment. In actuality, it's just another way to make sure they get their money. Should one of those payments bounce, however, you'll be socked with a healthy overdraft fee from both the merchant and your bank. Once again, mark on your calendar the date each deduction will be made, so you can double check the balance in your account.
Don't Layway When You Can Pay
It's hard to part with cash during the holidays, when other expenses build up, but the fees you incur with a layaway plan aren't always worth it if you can pay cash now and avoid the hassle.

Elizabeth Hurley Speaks out for Breast Cancer Awareness
ESTÉE LAUDER AND THE ESTÉE LAUDER COMPANIES’
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITH THE ESTÉE LAUDER COMPANIES’ BREAST CANCER AWARENESS (BCA) CAMPAIGN?
Each October, I join Evelyn Lauder and travel around the world raising awareness for breast health and funds for breast cancer research. We’ve visited many U.S. cities, as well as the U.K., Australia, France, Holland, India, Italy, Scotland and South Africa, reaching many millions of people each year with our awareness message. We spend time at numerous retailers, meeting as many people as possible and telling them that if a localized breast cancer is detected early, it’s 98% curable. The Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign gives away millions of Pink Ribbons each year as a reminder about the importance of breast health. By the end of October 2011, The Estée Lauder Companies will have given away close to 115 million Pink Ribbons worldwide. We also sell our Pink Ribbon products, which are all wonderful products, and the best part is that they benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF) to help find a cure.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN?
Just after I started as an Estée Lauder model 16 years ago, Evelyn Lauder asked me to help her with The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. My grandmother had recently died of breast cancer, so it was a cause very close to my heart. This is a disease that knows no boundaries and does not discriminate, touching everyone in every country. We all know someone – a grandmother, friend, mother, aunt, sister, cousin or co-worker – who has battled cancer. Now more than ever, it is important to join together to get the message out: to tell everyone we know to see their doctors regularly and get
a mammogram every year if over the age of 40 because if a localized breast cancer is detected early, it’s 98% curable. Survival rates are rising and each year we get closer and closer to finding a cure for this disease.
Evelyn and I have traveled to many countries, meeting wonderful people, handing out Pink Ribbons, selling Pink Ribbon products and bathing gorgeous landmarks in pink lights to raise awareness for breast health. It’s extremely rewarding to work on this

campaign and I know that my grandmother would be very proud to see that the information available today about breast health is
much more prevalent than ever.
WHAT MAKES THIS YEAR’S CAMPAIGN DIFFERENT FROM PAST YEARS?
This year, The BCA Campaign has taken their “Connect. Communicate. Conquer.” theme to the next level by emphasizing strength in numbers and the collective power of working together towards a common goal. This year’s theme, “TOGETHER. Connect. Communicate. Conquer. For A Future Free of Breast Cancer.” implores everyone across the globe to join Together to Connect and Communicate with everyone they know – men and women – about the importance of breast health and early detection in order
to Conquer this disease once and for all. We cannot underestimate that knowledge is power and we must continue to make a difference by spreading this message.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PRODUCT THAT IS SOLD DURING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER TO BENEFIT BCRF?
All of the Pink Ribbon products are really special, but if I had to choose my favorite, it would be the Estée Lauder’s Elizabeth Hurley Pink Ribbon Collection. It features a Pure Color Crystal Lipstick in Lavish Pink, along with a beautiful accessory bag. It looks and
feels so incredible and leaves your lips wanting more. I wear it all the time and the best part is that a percentage of the suggested retail price goes to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Lady Gaga, Nicola Formichetti & MAC VIVA GLAM
Today M·A·C VIVA GLAM spokesperson Lady Gaga and Nicola Formichetti, Gaga’s stylist, premiered a short film directed by Ruth Hogben, which will unveil The Masterpiece that Nicola designed for Lady Gaga as part of the VIVA GLAM social awareness campaign.
The interactive movement on VIVAGLAM.COM leveraged the powerful voices of Gaga’s monsters and M·A·C fans to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and ultimately support men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS globally. Participants contributed self-portraits, shared information about HIV/AIDS and encouraged friends to ‘live with passion and love with protection’ across their personal social networks. Thousands of people participated and Nicola chose select images to incorporate in the design of The Masterpiece, a dress that Lady Gaga reveals in the film.
The film that will debut on VIVAGLAM.com was truly a collaborative project inspired by the fans, for the fans. Additionally, it celebrates the success of Lady Gaga’s VIVA GLAM campaign, which has helped to raise $55 million for the M·A·C AIDS Fund over the past two years. In February 2011, Gaga set the goal of raising $250 million for the M·A·C AIDS Fund by the XIX International AIDS conference in July 2012.
As her time as a Viva Glam spokesperson comes to a close, Lady Gaga urges her little monsters and MAC fans to continue to help reach $250 million: “The M·A·C AIDS Fund has raised $224 million to date. Go out and buy a lipstick for your girlfriend, your boyfriend, your mom or your sister --- $26 million to go, little monsters!” |

Does limiting your alcohol intake to one drink per day reduce your lifetime risk of breast cancer?
Does a woman’s body weight affect her breast cancer risk?
Facts:
Limit alcohol to one drink per day or avoid it completely since there seems to be some link between alcohol and breast cancer, although we don’t know how strong.
Maintain a healthy body weight and limit fat intake. There is a clear link between obesity and breast cancer because of the excess estrogen production in fatty tissue.

Celeb Stye: Dita Von Teese
The international queen of retro-style and burlesque, Dita Von Teese, has partered with Kiss to launch a line of easy to apply half-moon manicured nails in a deep red shade, recalling the high-fashion vintage look of the 1930’s and ‘40’s.
“I wanted to offer a shortcut to obtaining the nail style
that I have been wearing for the last 20 years, and Kiss has helped make it a
reality,” notes Von Teese.
Dita Von Tesse Nails by Kiss take the drama out of mastering
this shape while bringing glamour to every woman. The technique of leaving the
nail bed, or “moon,” bare or neutral-toned actually began as a way to prolong a
manicure as it grew out. This signature look was also considered a status
symbol for the age. “I think it was a way of showing that you had someone take
the time to do your nails and perfectly paint the half-moon rather than doing
them yourself,” says Von Teese. “If you look very, very closely, the most
glamorous and iconic portraits of the 1930s and 1940s show the half-moon
manicure.”
