The Greatest Album of 1991: The 20th Anniversary of Nirvana's ‘Nevermind’
On the eve of the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s seminal rock album “Nevermind,” MTV News is delving into its archives and soliciting expert and fan opinions’ to deliver a week-long celebration that will reveal the importance, rise and lighter side of one of the most impactful bands of the 1990s with “MTV News Presents: Nirvana – The Nevermind You Never Knew.”
In addition to releasing rarely seen footage from the band’s multi-year relationship with the network, MTV News is giving fans the chance to vote on “Which Rock Album is the Greatest of 1991?” and “What is the Greatest Year for Rock in the MTV Era?” with a new online poll that remains open through Wednesday, September 21st at 12 pm ET/9am PT.
"Nirvana's ‘Nevermind’ is the rare album that not only lends itself to being mythologized, but deserves to be, as well," said James Montgomery, Senior Rock Correspondent for MTV News. "You remember where you were when you first heard the opening chords of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ mostly because you knew -- on some level -- that nothing would ever be the same again. The song and album single-handedly defined a moment when rock truly rocked, and anything seemed possible."

How to Get Silky Straight Hair: Backstage Beauty at Jenny Packham 2012
backstage beauty at jenny packham
spring 2012 ready-to-wear / new york fashion week
Jenny Packham continued to partner with L’Oréal Professionnel to
create the hair for her Spring 2012 runway show, which took place on September 12 at the Tents at Lincoln
Center. Creating the simple yet perfect style to complement the delicate designs for the second consecutive
season was top hairstylist, Leonardo Manetti.
“Have you seen her all in gold, like a queen in days of old; she shoots colors all around; like a sunset going
down…” These lyrics from The Rolling Stones’ tune, “She’s A Rainbow,” are what Jenny Packham describes
as the inspiration for her Spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection. The latest line is a soft yet dramatic prelude to
Spring: billowing silk chiffons and French lace – some adorned in Swarovski crystals - in a vibrant range of
hues that gracefully floated and sparkled down the runway.
Lead hairstylist Leonardo Manetti for L’Oréal Professionnel, matched the theme and tone of Packham’s
colorful, romantic vision. “We wanted to compliment the flow of the dresses, so the hair had to be soft and
beautiful,” said Manetti. “The clothes and colors in the collection are so vibrant, fresh, and young, and so is the
hairstyle. An ethereal ‘perfect’ blowout was the ideal look.”

How to Get Red Carpet Hair like Julianna Margulies
Julianna Margulies walked the red carpet for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards in a gown by Armani Prive and the best accessory: flawless hair.
EverSoPopular got the scoop on how she got that hair. We caught up with Margulies' hairstlyist
Matthew Monzon. Check out Monzon’s hair care breakdown and how to video, using Leonor Greyl products.
I started with damp hair and worked Leonor Greyl’s Lait Luminescence Bi-Phase Detangling Milk through her hair, applying the product only from the mid-shaft down through the ends so as not to over-saturate it.
To create volume, I combed Leonor Greyl’s Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice through the hair with a wide-tooth comb and blow-dried it using a two-inch round brush. I made a deep side part on the left and then set the top portion of her hair in Velcro rollers for a little bit of extra oomph.
Then, I started to work on the back:
· Making sure to spray Leonor Greyl Voluforme Styling Spray for Volume and Hold to each section before curling, I used a 1½ inch curling iron to barrel-curl the bottommost layer of Julianna’s hair in a uniform direction· I created another layer on top of that one, barrel-curling the sections but this time changing the direction of the curl from that of the first layer
I continued this pattern for remaining portion of the back of Julianna’s hair by creating layer on top of layer, maintaining the direction of the curl within one layer and switching to the opposite direction for the next. Alternating the direction of the curl between layers allowed the hair to fall into the wave that I was hoping to achieve.
After completing the back of Julianna’s hair, I removed the top half from the Velcro rollers and brushed through with a boar bristle brush, creating a soft wave with my fingers.
To complete the look, I finished with a spray of Leonor Greyl’s Laque Souple Light Styling Spray for hold.”
Red Capet Beauty: Emmy Winner Julie Bowen
You don't need to be an Emmy winner to have a gorgeous glow! I learned that makeup artist Heather Currie used Votre Vu sincare on Emmy winner Julie Bowen’s face for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards.
Heather says:
I started prepping Julie Bowen’s skin for the Emmys by applying the Luxe Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm from Votre Vu’s Duette, a hand cream/lip balm duo. I usually like to begin with lip balm when getting a celebrity ready for the red carpet to allow the moisture to really set in while I start on the rest of the face.
Then, I used Votre Vu Fleur Blanc Tonic for all skin types, swiping it over Julie’s skin to make sure that it was clean and ready for additional skincare.
I then used Votre Vu’s Attentive Sérum Delicat Pour Le Visage to nourish her skin and applied Votre Vu Tragic Magic Rescue Crème. The Tragic Magic gave a nice, subtle glow to Julie’s skin and is great for preventing any skin irritation or reactivity.
To finish Julie’s skincare prep and keep her eye area looking fresh, I applied Votre Vu Tout le Monde Antioxidant Eye Gelee to the eye contour.
After starting the makeup application with foundation, I began on the eye shadow, using Votre Vu’s Sweep Gentle Eye Makeup Remover to clean up any makeup that fell to the under eye area with a cotton swab.
When I finished Julie’s makeup, I applied a little of Votre Vu’s Luxee Yeux Eye Beauty Balm high on her cheekbones, just under the eyes, for a little bit of glow. I completed the look with a few spritzes of Votre Vu’s À Votre Santé Elixir Essentiel to set the makeup.
Before Julie left for the red carpet, I used Votre Vu’s Champagne Kisses Enhancing Lip Balm to enhance her lips prior to applying lip-gloss.

Hot New Spa Trends & Treatments for 2011
The International SPA Association recently hosted the 17th annual ISPA Media Event at Gotham Hall in New York, NY. The annual gathering included ISPA member spas and resource partners, and was attended by leading beauty, business and travel media. The ISPA Media Event promotes the spa industry, introduces the latest trends and releases new ISPA research while the participating ISPA members perform innovative and unique treatments on the media.
“The ISPA Media Event is an opportunity for the media to learn how the spa experience can improve the quality of life for so many people,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “We are all suffering from the effects of stress, and we have less time to spend away from those stress triggers. Learning techniques at the spa that can help you deal with built up tension, improve your appearance and take time out for yourself isn’t optional anymore it’s a necessity.”
New offerings were introduced along with several trends at the event including:
- Put your best face forward – Several facials were featured during the event, but one thing they all had in common was achieving a results-oriented experience. The HydroPeptide® Advanced Resurfacing Stem Cell Facial utilizes a unique blend of peptides and six different stem cells to achieve younger looking skin.Massage Envy Spas located throughout the U.S. showcased a Healthy Skin Vitamin C Infusion Facial that utilizes Murad products. The facial helps repair and prevent free radical damage caused by environmental exposure. Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY made sure that the men were catered to with their Fuel Your Face: Four Minutes to Fit Skin for Men facial. Formulated especially for men to balance, bioactivate and defend the skin. ZO® Skin Health by Zein Obagi, MD demonstrated the Ossential Stimulator Peel, a unique waterless facial performed in under 30 minutes, making it perfect for time-stressed spa-goers. A beta/alpha acid peel stimulates cellular turnover, reduces fine lines and wrinkles and improves overall skin tone, texture and clarity.
- Spa anywhere – The Suite Spa® cart is truly a mobile spa. The cart provides services ranging from a pedicure to a full body massage, performed just as they would be in a spa facility. Taking the spa experience into hotel rooms, hospitals, wellness communities and assisted living facilities. Spa-goers on the go can experience treatments like the Blueberry and Blue Tansy Foot Smoothie and The Marine Caffeine and Lavender Aloe Eye Rescue. All of the products used are from their signature organic line.
- All hands on deck – ELLE Spa at Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach in FL made sure to sooth the busy hands of writers in attendance by offering the Dead Sea Detoxifier. Dead Sea salts, which work to replenish minerals and botanical oils are massaged into the skin to cleanse, exfoliate and stimulate circulation. The Spa at Trump in New York, NY knows that the hands show the first signs of aging, so they created a treatment to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for younger looking hands. The Embrace Light Hand Treatment uses Baby Quasar LED Light Therapy to stimulate blood flow, increase circulation and increase the production of collagen.
- Balance your stress – One of the most important aspects of any spa experience is finding a way to balance your mind, body and spirit. Aspira Spa located in Elkhart Lake, WI helped align the chakras (energy points) of the media with their Chakra Gardens Massage. This customized massage uses the color and the vibration of indigenous plants to energize and balance the chakras giving an overall sense of peace and relaxation. Complete Harmony was developed by Kohler Waters Spa in Kohler, WI to clear the mind and release tension. Breathing exercises and aromatherapy help to induce a state of relaxation while a temple and scalp massage is performed. Skana, The Spa at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY also utilized the benefits of aromatherapy in their Oneida Peaceful Journey treatment. A dry oil is massaged into the arms and hands while a warm pine infused towel is applied to the neck and shoulders. The fatigue easing massage continues on the upper back, scalp and facial pressure points.
- Relaxation through sound vibration – Miraval Resort and Spa in Tucson, AZ introduced the TAIZ Sensorium™ a specially designed flax seed filled chair to massage from the inside out. The treatment incorporates music, base rhythms and sounds from nature to create vibrations that massage deeply into your body. It’s designed to calm the nervous system and promote healthy sleep patterns.
- Acupuncture that melts tension – Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat in Tallebudgera Valley, Queensland, Australia formulated their Rockupuncture treatment to aid those dealing with stress, adrenal exhaustion, fertility issues and insomnia. The application of warm stones allows muscles to relax so acupuncture can be performed to balance energy meridians.
