Red Carpet Glam: Gwyneth Paltrow Goes Wild Bohemian at the 53rd Grammy Awards

gywenth-paltrow-290The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards took center stage with Gwyneth Paltrow's "Wild Bohemian" look created by celebrity hairstylist David Babaii.

To achieve the look, David Babaii always starts with clean fresh hair. The clean canvas theory remains his mantra for every red carpet look. David began by applying Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment and gently massaging into the hair. The Pequi Oil Treatment is used prior to blow drying to deliver silky and shiny hair. With the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Ionic Blow Dryer, David rough dried the hair for texture and volume. Next, he created a center part and began taking random sections wrapping only the center portion of some of the strands (leaving the top and ends free) around  a 1" curling iron. Alternating stands were wrapped around the curling iron, leaving only the very tips free. This was done to create uneven curl patterns. Once the strand cooled, David ran his fingers up the strand creating a "fanning effect". To finish, he added additional Couture Colur Pequi Oil Treatment to his hands and tousled the waves for added volume, texture and hold.

Red Carpet Glam: Selena Gomez at the Grammy Awards

Selena Gomez at the Grammy Awards by Celebrity Makeup Artist Karan Mitchell

The inspiration for Selena's makeup was to compliment the sensual champagne shade of her J.Mendel dress with a soft focus. I started with Selena's eyes.

I first lined her upper and lower lashline with COVERGIRL LiquilineBlast eyeliner in Brown Blaze. I love how the liquid-like pencil blends so easily and that you can easily control its intensity. Using a medium eyeshadow brush I blended the light shade from the COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire on the entire eyelid up to the eyebrow. I then took the darker shade,  and with a smaller eyeshadow brush, I blended the color above and below the eye as well as into the crease of the eyelid. I then used the COVERGIRL Eye Enhancers Eyeshadow in Brown Smolder on the outside corners of her upper eyelids to create more dimension and drew a thin line with a slight wing to the outer edges on the upper lash line using COVERGIRL LineExact Liquid liner in Very Black. I finished her eyes with two coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara in Black.

For her skin, I used COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Silk Foundation to give her a flawless finish. To highlight the t-zone and highlight under the eyes I used the COVERGIRL CG Smoothers Concealer in medium. To set the base I used COVERGIRL TruBlend Pressed Powder in #2 Translucent Light with a soft brush. I then applied to the apples of the cheeks COVERGIRL Cheekers Blush in Pretty Peach. I finished her look with COVERGIRL LipPerfection lipcolor in the bright gorgeous shade of Siren.

clip_image002Eyes: First, apply Dreamy Eyes Eyeshadow in Gold Envy from lashline to browbone as your shimmering gold base. To create depth, apply Dreamy Eyes Eyeshadow in Chocoholic to crease. Bring everything together with a little liner; opt for Look of Love Eye Pencil in Brownie Points on the upper and lower lashline. To finish the eyes sweep lashes with All that Lash Mascara in Kickin’ Brown.

Cheeks: For a flirty glow, dust the apples of cheeks with Peek-A-Blush Sheer

Powder Cheek Color in Dapple Apple.

Lips: Finish this look off with a bang! Sexy red lips will catch any man’s attention! For seductive lips, try High Wattage Intense & Creamy Lipcolor in Fling, a deep rich red. Remember to line your lips first to have the product stay put. Try Draw Attention Lip Pencil in Cherry Pie.

clip_image002[4]Eyes: First apply Dreamy Eyes Eyeshadow in Peach Champagne from lashline to browbone as the base. Next, take Dreamy Eyes Eyeshadow in Gypsy Nights and apply it into the crease for some added shimmer and shine. For additional drama, add a swipe of Opening Line Liquid Liner in Ebony Edge to the top lashline only. Wing out the liner to add a feathery effect. Flirty lashes complete your eye look. All that Lash Mascara in Kickin’ Black gives you super pumped up, over-the-top volumized lashes.

Cheeks: Create a “flushed” look the cheeks that’s very sexy and romantic. Dust the

apples of the cheeks with Peek-A-Blush Sheer Powder Cheek Color in Crazy in Love. Lips: To finish this look, go for a pinky-nude lip. First, apply Chickstick Smooth and Shiny Lipcolor and Sizzle. Top with Squeeze Me Sheer and Shiny Lipcolor in Candy Grapefruit for a shiny finish.

Maison: Fun, Flirty and Sophisticated for Spring 2011

Designer Wendy Wong pushes the sartorial envelope via classic spring silhouettes with a twist (and perhaps a drape and pleat or two). Maison also has some tricks up its sleeve with surprising side jersey cowls, digital prints and pulls of chiffon. Sophisticated and feminine, Maison is a must know and must have for any style maker with an eye for crowd pleasers.

And what does Wong insist upon? Creamy and dreamy fabrics that she scours the world for. “When I see a fabric I just know: you’re the one. I touch a fabric and I can automatically see the garments. I feel it then I build a piece around it.” As her designs grow organically from a choice fabric, trust in a perfect marriage of feel and fit.

While there’s much in the collection that’s worth praising, a few stand out pieces include:

Vienna: An effortless number with a profound digital silk print that resonates of abstract watercolors. Look closely to see cranes in the print that emerge as if from a reflecting pool. The ruffles along the top add movement to the fluid print and the elastically cinched waist gently brings the figure into focus. Suggested retail price: $187

Venice: This piece nods to Wong’s talent for twisting, draping and pleating. The dress is made of silk and asserts the right amount of frills without the fuss. The fabric drapes from the waist to opposite shoulder, and then falls to embrace the bottom half curves in a most graceful way. Indeed a delectable sartorial treat. Suggested retail price: $242

Sway: Sweet and pretty, this piece is noteworthy for day and spot on for night. The silhouette is flattering and curve celebrating and the chiffon one shoulder draping adds interesting movement and sophisticated detail. The ladylike sentiment of the dress resonates with anyone with an appreciation for vintage. Suggested retail price: $242

Mist: Shorts with paper bag waist. The fit is expertly tailored and the fabric is full without being bulky. The high waist begs for a tucked in shirt and the length is just right. These shorts are a strong basic on the way towards a knock out ensemble. Suggested retail price: $143

Winter Stop ‘N’ Swaps Offer Cure for Post-Holiday Clutter

As 2011 begins, so does the annual ritual of cleaning out the old and beginning anew.  Familiar resolutions of being more organized and having a smaller environmental footprint raise the same question: what to do with all this “stuff?”

GrowNYC, a local environmental non-profit, offers one solution with Stop ‘N’ Swap events which will span the five boroughs in January and February.  The community is invited to bring unwanted but still usable items to donate to a good home.  Participants can also bring a bag and fill up on items they would like to take with them.  The group asks that all items be portable so others can easily carry them away.

From books and toys to fashionable clothing, house wares and working electronics, items come and go throughout the day, landing quickly in the welcome hands of a new owner.  Whatever is left at the end is sorted and donated or recycled.  The group estimates that 90% or more of what comes in ends up getting reused.

GrowNYC has partnered with local schools, a library branch and community group to co-host a winter swap in each borough:

Bronx (Mott Haven): Saturday, February 5, 11am-2pm
BronxWorks Betances Community Center
547 E. 146th St at St. Ann’s Ave

Queens (Jackson Heights): Saturday, February 12, 11am-2pm
Renaissance Charter School, basement cafeteria
35-59 81st St. b/t 37th & 35th Aves

Brooklyn (Ft. Greene): Saturday, February 26, 11am-2pm
M.S. 113 lobby, 300 Adelphi Street b/t DeKalb and Lafayette

For more information, visit us at www.grownyc.org/swap.

Stop ‘N’ Swaps have developed a regular following among the thrifty and environmentally conscious.  “Stop ‘N’ Swaps have hit at the right time. In this economy, they’re a great way for residents to find things they need without having to pay and they are reducing the amount of garbage that NYC generates,” said GrowNYC Executive Director Marcel Van Ooyen. “In fact, it’s a triple-win; in addition to economic and environmental benefits, they also build community as New Yorkers come out and meet their neighbors.”
“While our primary mission is to help increase recycling in NYC, reusing items is even better, as waste is prevented at no cost,” said Christina Salvi, the Assistant Director of GrowNYC’s Office of Recycling Outreach and Education.

Hair Style How To: Nicole Kidman at the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

Nicole-Kidman-2011-SAG-Awards

Modern elegance was David Babaii's inspiration for Nicole Kidman's SAG red carpet look.

Starting with clean hair, David applied his new favorite must have product called Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to her entire head. It is rich in moisture-restoring antioxidants, Vitamin A, E, proteins and lipids. The Pequi Oil Treatment instantly absorbs and won't weigh hair down. Next, he blow dried Nicole's hair with the IT&Y HAIRFASHION Ionic Dryer that supplies super-fast drying power along with a large round brush to achieve a sleek straight finish. After the hair was dried, he gently back combed the top and sides for volume and then smoothed the surface. To begin the up-do, he swept the hair gently over creating a faux side-part and brining the rest of the hair to the center back and securing with a band just at the top of the nape. David wrapped the hair into an un-structured Chignon and securing with bobby pins. The secret was not to over comb or smooth the hair but to allow the hair to create a soft natural look. To finish, he used additional Pequi Oil to her bang area to define strands. For added glamour, David added a subtle decorative clip to the side.

Get the Red Carpet Look: Hilary Swank’s Bombshell Curls at the SAG Awards

SAG Awards - Arrivals“Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role” nominee and award presenter Hilary Swank wore her hair long, loose and sexy for the SAG Awards tonight.

Wearing a soft, champagne-colored Versace gown, she looked red-carpet perfect.

hilary

The “Conviction” actress’ gorgeous hair was designed by leading Hollywood stylist, Robert Vetica, who was inspired by the sensual lines of her dress and the hairstyles of iconic 60’s Hollywood siren and Bond girl, Ursula Andress.

Vetica shared how he created the beautiful look:

“I started by blow-drying Hilary’s hair using Moroccanoil Treatment to instantly condition, bring any dry ends back to life and make her hair easier to style.  It also gave the hair a brilliant, natural-looking shine.

After the hair was dried, I did a full head set by curling 1” by 1” sections of hair, starting at the nape of the neck, then pinned to the head. These were real, full base curls, not spiral curls.  I continued section by section until I reached the crown, then finished the sides and top of the head. When I finished, it had the look of a 60’s roller set, which could have been done using hot rollers.

I gave the set a good spray of Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray and let it sit for 20 minutes, to insure a good, healthy-looking set.

To finish, I removed the set and gave it a good brushing. Next, I took a small amount of Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to give the hair a touch of weight and ensure body.

I then gave the hair a good backcombing at the root and sprayed again. I brushed out most of the backcombing except at the crown, running my fingers through the hair to loosen it up. I then backcombed a bit more at the crown, gave it another spray and lightly brushed over the top.

Moroccanoil products are sold exclusively in fine salons. Consumers can find the nearest salon by visiting http://www.moroccanoil.com.

13_gwenstefaniloreal_560x375A unique voice, a fashion icon, a rock star... Gwen Stefani is clearly a phenomenon of the 21st century. The front woman of rock band No Doubt, she also released two highly successful dance records, which furthered her iconic status. L'Oreal Paris is extremely pleased to welcome her today as the brand's new face.

“I can't believe I get to be one of the L'Oreal Paris girls. I love playing dress up, on stage or shooting videos, it's always been one of my favorite parts of being in a band. And to get to work with such a modern, talented group of people is really exciting. I'm a lucky, lucky girl", says Gwen Stefani.

Gwen Stefani is fascinating. She has been a member of the band No Doubt since they met in high school and began playing music in their garage. Red Carpet Worthy Hair: Amy Adams at the Golden Globes

Amy Adams Golden Globes GettyImages_108079130Golden Globes nominee for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Feature Film, Amy Adams, looked radiant as she wore a gorgeous strapless Marchesa gown with her fabulous red hair worn in a flowing, back-braided updo created by celebrity stylist Laini Reeves.

Laini Reeves explains how the look was styled:

I wanted to create a soft 20’s mood, but in a different, modern way.  We started by changing the texture of her hair before we went on to loosely braid and roll the chignon.

Amy has a beautiful, full and thick head of hair and a nice, natural wave. We started by washing her hair with Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo which infuses the hair with argan oil, keratins, fatty acids, and proteins. Combined with Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Conditioner, it immediately controlled the hair and left it smoother, frizz free and easy to manage and style.

MoroccanoilStylingCreamI then applied Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, $31.80, while it was drying, from root to end to give soft hold while further smoothing the texture and adding definition and shine. I rough-dried the hair with my hands to get the water out and created a bit of a messed up texture with a slight touch of wave for a more modern, freer look.  The hair was air dried except at the roots, where I used a blow dryer.

MoroccanoilLuminousHairsprayNext, I used a 1” curling iron to make curls in different parts of the hair that needed to be filled in and then smoothed and blended them in.  I made a side part and prepared some pieces from the front of the hair to frame her face, pinning them in an “S”-shape and away from the rest of the hair.

I gathered and pulled back the rest of hair, made a loose braid that I doubled up, rolled upwards and pinned at the nape, with the cross texture side of the braid showing.  Only five thick bobby pins were used to secure the style in place.

Finally, I released the “S”-shaped sections in the front and pinned them behind the ear to open her face up and to show off her cheek bones.  I then sprayed the look with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray, $21.00, to keep everything in place with movable shine, without looking like it was sprayed.
