Cool Sophistication: Sjobeck Spring 2011

Cattle ranch casual and high society chic converge in the spring 2011 collection of Malibu born and bred Sjobeck. Think relaxed, floaty and sheer, calm, cool and sophisticated. Contemporary silhouettes are rendered in vintage-inspired European silk chiffons and cashmeres for the ultimate in laidback luxury.
The spring 2011 collection is inspired by the shift from winter to spring on the Malibu coast. Flowy chiffons and printed silks evoke the brisk breezes of early spring, while a color palette of brights muted in pastels recalls the early morning marine layer that blankets the shoreline.
For spring, Sjobeck adds dynamic new prints and a luxe cashmere t-shirt to its repertoire of effortless, weightless pieces. Other styles include polka dot pocket skirts, long goddess dresses and butterfly sleeve silk/sheer tops.
Among the collection’s signature pieces the standouts include:

  • Silk/chiffon romper: Sweet and sexy, without trying too hard. In playful zebra and tribal prints, this romper is great for work or play. Details include a four-button placket, hand-painted vintage buttons and side tabs sewn onto each leg for an asymmetrical look. Suggested retail $253.
  • Kimono Wrap Dress: Show your bright side with an elegant kimono-style wrap dress. In feather printed silk charmeuse it’s romantic and fanciful.  With side ties and a slight asymmetrical curve at the hem, this lightweight wrap flirts and flatters. Suggested retail $310.
  • “My Cashmere T”: Basic was never better. This short sleeved knit cashmere and modal blend is the ultimate in versatility and luxury.  Wear it alone or layered, again and again.  Available in black, navy, white and wheat. Suggested retail $90.
The line is available at Ron Herman, Singer22, Fred Segal and Montmartre NY.

Men’s Accessories: Casio Launches New Men’s Watch Line

Bryan Greenberg 1

Casio celebrated the launch of their new men’s watch line – Edifice Black Label – with a VIP cocktail reception at the Tourneau TimeMachine store in NYC. On-hand to host the festivities was actor Bryan Greenberg (star of HBO’s “How To Make It In America”), brand ambassador for the new line and avid watch aficionado. Greenberg spoke about how a vintage Casio watch he purchased in Japan turned him onto the brand and how wearing a watch is one of the best ways a man can accessorize. Fresh off filming “Friends With Benefits” with Justin Timberlake, he plans to embark on his own music tour this coming month, with a new single “Walk Away” dropping in a few weeks.

The event also served as a launch for the new Casio exhibit at Tourneau which showcases the Edifice line along with watches from the Baby-G and G-Shock brands. The exhibit will be open to the public through December.

Edifice Black Label is a racecar-inspired line comprised of six sleek styles ranging in price from $150 to $500. The Black Label collection is dynamic and striking, exuding speed and technology from its aesthetics and functionality.  The watches are meant to take men from day to night, whether going to a sporting event or a night on the town. The multifunction metal analog watches are equipped with stylistic yet technological faces with über-stopwatch capabilities, LSI-controlled hand movements, world time, water resistance, daily alarms, solar power, multi-layered dials and more. Jose Reyes & 300 New York City Public School Students at Old Navy

Jose%20step%20and%20repeat%202[1]

To encourage school attendance among New York City Public School students, Old Navy – with the help of Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, Chancellor Joel I. Klein, the Mayor’s Chief Policy Advisor John Feinblatt, and New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes – gave 300 students a shopping experience to remember as part of their Attendance Drive initiative.

Amy and Jose

The students who participated in the event are from several schools participating in the Mayor’s citywide pilot program addressing chronic absenteeism and truancy.   Each student signed and recited an official Attendance Pledge and received a new winter coat and $50 gift card to purchase new school clothes at Old Navy’s flagship store on 34th Street in Manhattan.

Amy at podium“Student test scores, attendance and drop out rates have steadily improved over the past eight years, as has the quality of a New York City public school education," said Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein. "These interagency collaborations, combined with support from committed partners like Old Navy, will take us one step closer to ensuring that all students have the chance to take advantage of what our schools are offering."
While attendance rates have improved at NYC public schools, approximately one out of every five New York City school students missed one month or more of school last year.  Research shows that three out of four students who are chronically absent in the sixth grade never graduate from high school.  Furthermore, the first six weeks of the school year have been identified as the most crucial weeks for establishing strong attendance yearlong.
“When we learned that one of the reasons for low attendance is embarrassment from wearing the same clothes repeatedly, we decided to step in with our Attendance Drive initiative,” said Amy Curtis-McIntyre, senior vice president, marketing, Old Navy.  “Rewarding students who show their commitment to attending school is a humbling experience.  Old Navy is proud to participate in a program that helps keep students engaged in their education.  Empowering today’s students and young people is essential for a positive future,” added Curtis-McIntyre.

The Old Navy Attendance Drive was created to motivate students to attend class, inspire them with memorable mentor moments featuring role models such as Mets player Jose Reyes, and reward them for improving attendance with clothes they’re eager to wear to school.   The 300 students got to meet Reyes yesterday. Reyes stressed the importance of attending school every day and encouraged students to adhere to their pledge. He also handed out autographed items.

Jose addressing students during mentor momentThe Attendance Drive event was the fourth in a series that took place in school districts across the country this Fall.  Since late August, Old Navy has hosted Attendance Drive events at stores in Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles, encouraging attendance and awarding shopping sprees to more than 900 students, from kindergarten through eighth grade.  Each event has consisted of “mentor moments” led by school principals or administration officials prior to the students reciting the Attendance Pledge aloud, before commencing their $50 shopping sprees.

Old Navy plans to extend its Attendance Drive initiative by issuing another challenge to students, inviting them to demonstrate perfect attendance through the end of the school year.  For store locations, please visit www.oldnavy.com

Get The Look: Blake Lively’s Chic Hair From The Spike TV’s Scream Awards!

Blake Lively looked flawless from head to toe at Spike TV’s “Scream 2010 Awards”. To complete her long, gray Lanvin ensemble, Lively opted for a simple, sleek style for her hair. Emilie Luciano, ECRU New York Styling Director, provides simple how-to steps and the products needed to create Lively’s chic hair style.

Ecru
First, start by running ECRU Silk Nectar Serum throughout hair from roots to ends. Next, take a boar bristle paddle brush and brush hair until it’s smooth and ready to be put into a ponytail. ($32.50)

Ecru _Then, use a rubber band to start placing hair in the motion of a ponytail, but do not pull the hair all the way through. Instead, keep hair looking like a loop. Dirty the loop with some ECRU Sunlight Styling Spray. Then, take hairpins or bobby pins and pull and tuck random strands of the loop in different directions, working into the shape of a round bun. Pinning the hair here and there with each strand creates that messy bun look. ($22.95)

Ecru_Once the shape is formed, finish the look with ECRU Sunlight Finishing Spray MAX to really hold the style in place. ($22.95)

Celebrating the Day of the Dead

Day of the dead

While the popular holiday of Halloween is celebrated on October 31st, with costume parties and haunted houses, Mexico celebrates the Day of the Dead on November 1st and the 2nd, the Day of the Dead, “Día de Muertos” or as it is known within the Mayan tradition, “Hanal Pixán”.
The tradition suggests the belief that between October 31st and the day of the celebration, the souls of the dearly departed roam the earth to enjoy the pleasures they had in their earthly life. The holiday is meant to honor those who have passed, and celebrate their life.
As a result of the mixing of cultures and their Catholic and Mayan antecedents, the days of the dead are a time of great family togetherness in which the whole family take part and everyone is involved.
Throughout the state of Quintana Roo, “Hanal Pixan” -as the Day of the Dead is known within the Mayan tradition- is one of the most significant traditions, due to all the preparations involved: the building of beautiful altars, adorned with palm crosses, candles, drinks, pictures and the “deceased’s”  favorite food comes to life. During “Hanal Pixan”, people pray and sing, sweep the yards and paint the walls to receive the dead with full honors.
Gastronomically, “Hanal Pixan” is a celebration that bursts with flavor. Large portions of the best dishes are prepared, with the idea that the souls enjoy earthly pleasures such as food. Proof of this is the Mucbipollo, from the Mayan “Pib” which means “buried” and is a tamale or corn cake stuffed with chicken, sauce, broth and spices, cooked in a hole in the ground and covered with banana leaves. All the food is arranged on the altars for the souls to have their feast. The belief dictates that the offered food looses its flavor and nutrients by the next day.
Cancun Quintana Roo All these customs and traditions can be experienced in Cancun throughout the 5th Festival of Life and Death Tradition, created by Xcaret Park. This Year, the state of Chiapas will be added to the event as a special guest, offering a display of their artwork, music and crafts used to celebrate this holiday.
The 33 communities participating in the event, share with tourists their traditions and beliefs from a first hand experience through theatrical performances, concerts, gatherings, games and more than 200 activities in 13 different forums. The 685 artists performing have gathered a wealth of stories, tales and legends under the theme “200 years of life and death” as part of the bicentennial year of Mexico’s independence.
Day of the dead was declared in 2003 as a World’s Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO, due to the importance it has on Mexican indigenous communities’ everyday lives regarding the different dimensions and perceptions of death.
The Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau invites visitors to take part in the tradition that surrounds “Hanal Pixan” “Feast of Souls”, from the number one tourist destination in Mexico.

Gearing Up: Nike Introduces Spring 2011 Running Collection

With marathon season in full swing, we caught a runners and high and got inspired to start running. Now the question is what to wear? A few words come to mind: light, fit, dry, support, comfort and performance! We previewed the latest Nike Spring 2011 Running Collection. Below you will find a sneak-peek into Nike’s latest running innovations.

nike air max 2011 Nike Air Max 2011+
Just when people thought it couldn’t get any more comfortable, the Air Max 2011 surprises everyone. It still has the same soft, reliable cushioning from heel to toe that runners expect, but they also get a track-spike inspired upper with Nike Hyperfuse technology-for better support, more ventilation and a seamless fee with less weight.
nike lunarelite 2
LunarElite+2
The latest LunarElite+ is lighter, more flexible and better fitting. It kept the same responsive cushioning in Dynamic Support and provides runners a smoother ride by giving them the right amount of stability the foot needs. Flywire technology draws the shoe’s upper securely around the foot and flex grooves along the bottom of the shoe increases flexibility for a smooth transition from heel to toe.
nike lunarhaze
Nike LunarHaze+
The new member of the Dynamic Support line of footwear, the LunarHaze+ is light, strong and highly breathable. The new Hyperfuse upper comfortably supports the foot on long hauls, but is light and flexible enough for a fast run. The soft, springy cushioning and Dynamic Support underfoot ensures that runners have all the comfort and stability they need.
nike zoom superfly
Nike Zoom SuperFly
Drawing upon years of inspiration and knowledge, Nike designers have created the latest, most powerful speed spikes. Strong enough to withstand the forces sprinters put on them while accelerating; the Zoom SuperFly’s stiff spike plate delivers the ultimate traction for the ultimate acceleration. Strong, lightweight Nike Hyperfuse latticework on the upper secures and supports the foot. Forefront strap locks the foot over the spike plate for maximum power transfer.
nike cyclone
Nike Cyclone
The new Nike Cyclone Jacket looks unlike anything runners have seen before. The spots inside the jacket work to move sweat away from the body and keep the fabric from sticking to the skin, keeping runners dry and comfortable. The durable lightweight ripstop fabric provides protection against wind and light rain. If the weather turns nice, runners can simply stuff away the whole jacket into the chest pocket.

nike phantom vapor Nike Phantom Vapor
The only time a runner should notice a jacket is when it’s keeping him/her warm and dry. Every detail of the Phantom Vapor- from the soft, breathable, ultralight fabric to the ergonomic design to the zippers and pockets- is designed to eliminate distractions. And when the skies open, an innovative water-repellent treatment ensures precipitation never gets in the way of a good run.

nike vaporNike Vapor
Vapor Jacket offers tons of protection from the elements in just a few ounces of weight. Featherweight fabrics treated with a breathable water-repellent treatment helps keep runners dry and comfortable while allowing sweat to escape. Meanwhile, features like front and side zippered pockets and a storable hood keep everything within reach- yet completely out of the way.
